Naming your new puppy is one of the joys of getting a new puppy. Keep in mind throughout his or her lifetime, you will use your bulldog’s name over 40,000 times. So try to pick a name you & your family will enjoy saying that won’t get old fast 🙂
Below are some tips for finding the perfect name for your bulldog puppy.
Remember that bulldogs understand brief commands. Names should therefore be easy to remember. Names with two syllables or lesser work better. You shouldn’t expect your bulldog puppy to be able to respond to you immediately if you name him a very long name.
The name you pick for your English bulldog puppy should not sound like the rest of the commands. For example, if you name your bulldog “Kit” it is close with the common command “sit”. Having a name like that can be very confusing to your bulldog.
Also keep in mind that you will be using the dog’s name in public so try to choose a name you don’t mind calling out in public. Try to pick a name that won’t be embarrassing or cause many jokes as the jokes will get old 🙂 Some of the most popular bulldog names in America are Mack, Winston, Meaty, Otis, Jake, Buddy, Max, Duke, Maggie, Molly, Lady, Brandy, Bailey, Sadie, Sam, Lucy, Rocky, Daisy, Buster, and Ginger.
Try thinking of names of things / memories you associate with as a positive experience. For example, your favorite cocktail, your favorite holiday destination, vacation, fav city in another country (name of a tropical island). Also consider a famous name from history or a character from a story you have read.Example: the name of famous historical Bulldogs “Roseville Blaze”, “Winston Churchill”,”Frosty SnowMan”, “Titan”, “King Dicky”, “Monarch”, etc.
It’s best not to name your bulldog puppy until you interact with him so you can better pick the name that really fits him or her 🙂 Once you have a couple bulldog names picked out call those names out load several times to get an idea of what feels right. Ask your family what they want to name the bulldog. Let everyone participate in the naming decision process. Taking family votes is a good idea.
What about naming an older bulldog? If you adopt an adult bulldog or rescue bulldog it would be probably better to stick with its old name. But if the name of the dog is one of your children’s names or an ex spouses name then try to stick with names that sound similar to it.
