SHRINKABULLS STYLE ENGLISH & FRENCH BULLDOGS

What is called the “Miniature English Bulldog” is not a nationally recognized dog breed by Joe Jonas Winston bulldogkennel clubs like standard size English Bulldogs are. So the breed interpretation of a mini bulldog is what the breeder & pet owner considers a mini bulldog. Here at SHRINKABULLs we breed pure bred English Bulldogs from the original, best English Champion lines but on the small side. We do NOT mix our Bulldogs with other breeds as most breeders who claim to have mini bulldogs do!

The original Bulldog is theorized to be bred in England as a cross between the Mastiff, Bandogges, ancient Pugnaces and Britanniae of Great Britain, though the genetic origin is debated. The original Old English Bulldog was eventually crossed with the pug. The outcome was a shorter, wider bulldog with a brachycephalic head type. Today’s English bulldog looks tough but it does not & cannot perform the job the Bulldog breed was originally bred for, as English Bulldogs cannot withstand the rigors of running and being thrown from a bull, and cannot grip with such a short muzzle.

A true small / mini English Bulldog should just be a continuation of the down-scaled breeding of the English bulldog that was started after 1835 when the sport of bull baiting was banned. Most pure bred English Bulldogs are bred oversized here in America so it is not uncommon for a female Bulldog to be 65 – 95 lbs. Many bulldog breeders that go to our vet clinic even have 90 – 100 lb female bulldogs as breeders. We often have Champion AKC show breeders contacting us thinking one of thier female dogs is a mini bulldog because at 6 months old it is only 40 lbs! Here at Shrinkabulls we breed pure bred, short smaller English bulldogs. We do not out-cross with other breeds at all. We breed our Bulldogs to be small but still from the best Champion pedigrees. This being said our english bulldogs look more beautiful & bullie than most breeders claming to have Miniature Bulldogs. Most breeders I have talked with who breed what they call “miniature bulldogs” are actually breeding crosses between a 65 lb or so bulldog & a 25 or 30 lb Boston Terrier, Frenchie, Pug or other cross. These mixes are not predictable in size or in looks even though they may look cute & wrinkly as puppies. You may end up with a 65 lb. Boston or Frenchie as an adult, yikies!

This is why at SHRINKABULLs we do not believe in out-cross breedings. Through selective Bulldog Breeding of only high quality, healthy small Bulldogs we have created the sweet, docile family pets that we know of as Shrinkabull Bulldogs 🙂
